Easy Ideas For Fund Raisers - Make Big Money For Good Causes If They Will Let You In
If you are attempting to raise money for your organization or a good cause, there are certain guidelines, which may be helpful to remember. They do not trust just anyone with this type of lucrative work, it is lucrative because working for a charity, you have instant credibility and people will hand over money to you because you are representing the charity. You also get a good cut of the money you raise for your efforts. But it is hard to get in.
The whole purpose of a fundraiser is to generate much needed funds, so do not use any money in setting up the fundraiser that you absolutely do not have to. You want to be able to turn over a big fat check when this is over, and you do not want to have to explain that half of the collections went to organizational costs. A raffle for a high cost item, such as a DVD player, a bicycle or even a plasma television is usually a popular idea. You can purchase a roll of tickets from your local office supply store. Check with your local stores, while they may not be able to donate the item you want to raffle, they may give you a really good deal. Then have fliers printed, make them colorful and interesting, you want them to get a lot of attention, let people know that you are going to be selling tickets, and when the raffle will take place. Set up a website and give the details, make pages to show why this cause should have their support.
You can have a bake sale, or you can have an online yard sale. The key to a successful fundraiser is to use donated items. While selling products like ornaments or catalog items may seem appealing, the salesperson that is providing those items is the one who is going to reap the benefits of your hard work, not the charity you are trying to help. There are lots of easy ideas for fundraisers, just be you choose the right ones.
If you want to become a professional fundraiser, and yes there really are millionaires that have made their money raising funds for nationally recognized charities. But they scrutinize all affiliates and you must have impeccable character. You have to apply with your best face forward and show references and work history. But the financial rewards are worth it.

Recording Important Vital Signs After Having Surgery
Whether you stay in the hospital for a few days or return home immediately after surgery, it is important that you or, better yet, a caregiver keep a journal tracking some vital information. If this information is not recorded and an emergency occurs, information recounted from memory could be convoluted and partial, at best. At worst, it could be erroneous which could lead to your doctor recommending an inappropriate, potentially harmful, treatment. Below are five vital statistics that you or your caregiver should record after the surgery.
1. Temperature
Periodically take a reading of the patient's temperature. Whether you use a mouth, ear, or other type of thermometer, make sure that the reading is as accurate as possible. Record the temperature and the time it was taken. It is a good idea to do this every four hours, unless the doctor specifies differently.
2. Blood Pressure
So many vital body functions are affected by blood pressure, particularly post-op, and spiking or plummeting blood pressure is an indication that something is wrong. Like the patient's temperature, take an accurate blood pressure reading and record it along with the time. Your local drugstore will have a good selection of moderately priced digital blood pressure monitors. These monitors are very easy to use and will provide you with the readings you will need to record. It's efficient to take and record temperature and blood pressure at the same time.
3. Medicine Taken
Record the name of the medicine exactly as it is written on the bottle, the dosage amount (number of pills or amount of liquid), the milligrams or micrograms of the medicine, and the time it was taken. Also, note any side-effects experienced by the patient. For example, if the patient's pain medication causes dizziness, write it down.
4. Food/Liquid Consumed
Anything that goes in the patient's mouth should go down in the journal. Whether the patient feels good enough to wolf down a hamburger or just nibble on a few crackers, write it down. Whether the patient takes a few sips of ginger ale or gulps down a large smoothie, write it down. Record the type of food or drink, how much was consumed, and when it was consumed.
5. Frequency of Urination and Bowel Movements
Important? Yes! And vital information in the eyes of a doctor. Record when (date and time) the patient urinates or has a bowel movement. Note if there is anything unusual, such as the presence of blood. Also, jot down any complaints from the patient (e.g. the patient feels constipated).
Of course, this list provides only the basic vital sign information. Depending on the nature of the surgery and the health of the patient, it may also be beneficial to record other information such as the patient's blood sugar level or amount of sleep. Should your loved one require any emergency post-op care, the doctor will be happy to have the journal of symptoms to help determine a quick and accurate diagnosis and treatment options. Hopefully, in just a few days after surgery, your friend will be healing nicely and you can toss the journal in file thirteen.

Roto Spas - Understanding Rotational Plastic Molding
If you have never seen the movie "The Graduate" than you simply must see it for one good reason. It stars a young Dustin Hoffman and was made back in the early 1960s. In one very classic scene, a grizzled old and jaded businessman offers the secret to success to Dustin Hoffman's character. That secret is then carefully whispered in one word in his ear and that word is "Plastics".
Back then it was comedy but today no one is laughing and most certainly not the people who work at Roto Spas. This is because they incorporate the absolute very latest plastics molding technology to make their incredible very affordable portable spas that go from the truck to use in mere minutes.
It's called rotational plastics molding and it is the means by which extremely large items can be molded from molten plastic. Up until this technology was developed, larger items had to be made from other types of plastic such as vinyl that had innate shortcomings.
You have seen small durable plastic items such as toys before. These are made by an injection process and they are almost indestructible. However; molten plastic is difficult to form, so up until recent years only smaller items could be made with it. That is until rotational molding technology was developed.
With this new technology that's used by Roto Spas to create incredibly light and durable, high grade plastic spas, granular plastic is places into the large mold. The mold is then spun as it is held in an oven and the centrifugal force keeps the plastic evenly dispersed when it becomes molten.
After it's cooled, the plastic spa is trimmed and finished out. Then the next stage is to add all the other fittings and fixtures that go into making Roto Spas. Low cost and durability is why all their spas come with a ten year guarantee.

Twiggy's Trip To the Vet, Part Seven: The "End"
Twiggy's exam from the doctor includes mention of vomit, her full bladder (Don't squeeze the Charmin), and if you didn't catch it my concern of her little kitty bum. Twiggs was a very good kitty for the rest of her exam. She endured a rectal temp check, an ear check and culture collection, eye stain (where they put dye in the eye and check for scratches or ulcerations), administration of eye ointment and liquid oral antibiotics. Twiggs is being treated for a respiratory infection. Hopefully, she will be better soon. PS She didn't meow the whole way home.

How to Get Rid of Hemorrhoids - Find Out All You Want on How to Get Rid of This Terrible Illness
In order to get rid of hemorrhoids we need to learn what this is. Hemorrhoids are abnormally swollen veins that are found in the anus or rectum. It looks like the varicose vein normally found on someone's leg. When the veins become irritated they usually become swollen, they itch, they burn and may sometimes cause bleeding.
There are two types of hemorrhoids. The internal and the external.
The internal hemorrhoids are not usually diagnosed based on the fact that they are found inside the rectum. However if there is bleeding then you should visit the doctor as this can be a sign that something more serious is happening.
The external hemorrhoid on the other hand is the one that you will notice. They cause severe itching, burning and sometimes they are very painful. Once the blood supply through the swollen vein becomes blocked, then a clot will form causing a thrombosed hemorrhoid which is a painful condition that is hard, smooth and appears black or purple in color. It is so uncomfortable to the point where it feels like something is growing from the anus.
To get rid of hemorrhoids successfully you need to find out the causes. These are outlined below.
What causes Hemorrhoids?
1. Lack of fiber in the diet
2. Standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time
3. Anal intercourse
4. Straining during bowel movement
5. Severe diarrhea
6. Lifting too many heavy objects
7. Constipation- which is one of the top causes of hemorrhoids as straining puts pressure on the veins
8. Pregnancy. This is caused by hormonal changes in the body where there is an increased pressure created by the growing fetus that forces the veins to work extremely harder to pump blood.
How to get rid of Hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids can be removed by undergoing a surgical procedure but there can be side effects and pain associated with this form of treatment. Not only, that stitches can break during bowel movement as well as infection can also occur.
Laser treatment can also be used and this is a common way to get rid of hemorrhoids
Creams such as hydrocortisones may be used to relieve swelling and itching generally associated with hemorrhoids. This is available over the counter and should be applied externally to the affected areas.
Wearing cotton underwear and loose clothing may help to reduce swelling of the hemorrhoids.
You should also ensure that you clean the anus properly after bowel movement by either gently patting with moist toilet paper or pads.
Now Pay very close attention to this
I have recommended this remedy to several people before and they have found results that have left them feeling totally comfortable and able to feel like themselves once again.

Fever - To Treat Or Not? What All Parents Need to Know
Fever is one of the most common reasons why parents bring their children to me for an evaluation. Many parents perceive fever as a disease and fear that it may cause harm or even death if it is not treated. In this article, I would like to dispel the fever phobia.
What is fever?
Fever is an elevation of the body's temperature in response to infection. A part of the brain called the hypothalamus serves as the body's thermostat. It helps us maintain a normal temperature of about 98.6 F. Sometimes, the hypothalamus resets the body's temperature in response to an infection. An elevated temperature stimulates the immune system to fight off the infection.
Your child has a fever when her temperature is:
o 100.4° Fahrenheit (38° Celsius) measured rectally
o 99.5° Fahrenheit (37.5° Celsius) measured orally
o 99° Fahrenheit (37.2° Celsius) measured under the arm
How to measure temperature?
Research indicates that evaluation of temperature by touch or kiss does not correlate with the actual body's temperature. Therefore, it is important to measure it in a reliable way. Since pacifier, ear, or other newer thermometers have varied and have low sensitivity, the old-fashioned way of measuring your child's temperature is recommended. For infants younger than 3 months, a rectal temperature should be measured. In children 3 months to 5 years, the temperature should be measured under the arm, and older children can have their temperature checked either under the arm or orally.
How to treat your child's fever?
Since fever activates the immune system in an attempt to fight off infection, its presence is very beneficial. However, I use general rules of thumb for fever treatment:
o If the fever is 102 F or higher, it should be treated
o Any fever below 102 F that makes your child uncomfortable should be treated
Help your feverish child feel better by offering plenty of fluids. When your child has a fever, her body uses more water. A dehydrated child will always feel worse, so let her sip water, Gatorade, or diluted juice. A sneaky way of getting fluids in is to let your child eat Popsicles and Jello.
I do not recommend lukewarm baths for children running fevers, because they may get chilled. Shivering is caused by muscle contractions that produce heat; therefore, it tends to increase the body's temperature. Instead, apply cool compresses to the neck, forehead, under the armpits, and the groin area. Skin is very thin in those places, thus blood vessels are close to the surface. The cooled down blood will be distributed throughout the body and help your child's fever to go down.
Is alternating Tylenol and Motrin safe?
Alternating Tylenol and Motrin is not recommended. For higher fevers use ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil). For lower fevers, acetaminophen (Tylenol) should do the trick.
When should you see a health care provider?
When your child's fever lasts for longer than 3 days, she should be evaluated by a health care provider. Viral infections may produce fevers typically lasting for up to 3 days. Fevers lasting longer than that may indicate your child has a bacterial infection and requires an antibiotic.
If the fever is high, 102 or higher, and you cannot control it with ibuprofen, take your child in to see her health care provider as well. She might have a bacterial infection.
All infants running a fever younger than 3 months of age need to be seen by a health care provider immediately to rule out meningitis.

What Would You Use a Glass Thermometer For?
Everyone knows that a thermometer is a basic tool which measures the temperature of various different things. From humans and animals to foods, liquids and the weather outside, pretty much anything can be measured. However, not everyone realizes that nowadays you get a wide variety of instruments to help you do this. Whether you are looking for a digital, disposable, wall or glass thermometer, it is easy to find exactly what you are looking for.
The most obvious reason people think of when using a thermometer, is to take someone's temperature. This can easily be done from home and can save a trip to do the doctor which is particularly handy if you have young children who quite frequently get high temperatures. Although you can get a range of different instruments to do this, a glass thermometer is useful because they are inexpensive, easy to use and the actual thermometer is protected by the glass casing. As well as this, they are easy to clean as all you do is simply wash the glass and it is ready to be used again.
Another advantage of a glass thermometer is the fact that the glass case is see-through. This makes it quick and easy to get your reading which is very important because it needs to be noted as soon as possible in order to get the most accurate results.
A glass thermometer can also be used for a variety of other things including testing the temperature of food. Whether you are cooking a meal at home or you are a chef it can be very important to test the temperature of the food you are making in order to try and prevent food poisoning. If something is under the recommended temperature then chances are that it hasn't been cooked properly and there is therefore an increased risk of getting ill from it. Taking 30 seconds to ensure the food is at the right temperature can save a lot of hassle from happening in the future.
The fact that a glass thermometer is more protected that some other varieties is another big advantage of them. Quite often small things like that can get shoved to the bottom of a drawer or cupboard and therefore get damaged. However, the glass covering helps to protect the actual thermometer which means that you don't have to worry about it becoming ruined and less effective.
You can also use a glass thermometer to help take your pet's temperature as well. This is very useful because it means that you don't necessarily have to go to the vet if it's not needed. This saves time which is great if you work and are busy. As well as this, it also saves money because rather than paying someone to do it for you, you can do it yourself.

Beeswax Candle Making - Some Simple Steps to Get You Started
Beeswax candles are highly valued in 14th century and are very popular even today because of its smoke-free, long-burning, emitted a pleasant honey odor, and did not drip. Today, we will be learning the essentials of beeswax candle making - where the beeswax came from, the types of beeswax and how simple it is to make at the comfort of your home. Who knows, it can be a start of family bonding. Just make sure to keep your family safe.
Before we are going to make a beeswax candle, I just want to ask you the first thing that came up into your mind when you heard the word "beeswax".
Flower? Honey? Bees?
You are right! Beeswax came from bees. When bees eat honey, they'll produce wax and this wax is derived from honeycombs. They cool it and sell it as material in making candles. For those who are allergic to scent, beeswax has its natural honey scent so you don't have to add more scent in making one.
There are two types of this candle - the rolled up and the dipped. Both uses beeswax but have different procedures.
The pillar or rolled up beeswax type is the easiest to make. All you need to do is roll the beeswax sheet to the wick until you reach the size of candle you desired.
The dipped beeswax is more complicated than the rolled up but not as complicated as what you think. What makes it complicated is that you need more tools and time to make it.
Before you actually make the dipped beeswax candles, you must gather the materials you need like the beeswax, wicks, double boiler, thermometer and a stirrer.
If you don't have all the materials, just look around your kitchen and you'll find an alternative. Just be creative.
Having all the materials gathered for beeswax candle making, you need to melt the wax using your double boiler. You must use a thermometer to determine the temperature. The heat should not exceed from 160 degrees. If you want to use additive like dyes or coloring, mix it in the melted wax. Make sure that dyes or coloring are not flammable. Use any stick or a wooden spoon as a stirrer to mix all the ingredients. After the wax is prepared, you now dip the wicks. Dip the wicks down in the melted wax for a few seconds. Then let the candles cool after the dipping. After cooling the candles, then you can light it up and enjoy its wonderful beauty and its aroma.
Congratulations! You just finished creating your dipped and rolled up beeswax candle. Just a reminder to create an exquisite beeswax, As you learn more tricks on beeswax candle making, just be creative and don't be afraid to experiment new things. Always keep everything safe and clean. Have fun in making your beeswax candles!

ThermoPet worlds first non-contact dog thermometer with talking results
Now available the ThermoPet™ Non-Contact Thermometer for Dogs that delivers accurate results immediately without touching your pet! Like humans, dogs can also suffer from fever. In fact, a fever is often considered the first indicator for most diseases affecting dogs. If the fever is undetected, and left untreated, it can lead to serious health consequences. Some people have tried to use the human ear thermometers on their dogs, but they will not produce reliable readings, due to the way they are calibrated and the different shapes of the ear canal of a dog. Ear thermometers for dogs are invasive and difficult to use at best and very expensive at worst. The normal temperature range for a dog is (in degrees Fahrenheit) 101-102.5. Up until now, the only way to check for fever in a dog at home was by touching the inside of the ears or the nose of a dog guesswork at best. The only reliable way to determine fever, however, is by taking the dogs temperature. Taking a dog's temperature has long been an invasive procedure that usually takes two people one to restrain the pet, and the other to insert and hold the thermometer in place long enough to obtain an accurate reading. That has all changed with the introduction of the ThermoPet™ Non-Contact Thermometer for Dogs! The ThermoPet™ Non-Contact Thermometer for Dogs is the most economical and reliable way to assess fever in a dog. This device provides you with a non-invasive way to take your dog or cats temperature quickly and ...

Professional Home Care - Some Things to Remember
Almost everyone is going to come to that point in adulthood where they need to care for an elderly family member. This decision is a very difficult one indeed, being that we all want what is best for our loved ones, and of course, the best is always costly. There are an abundance of Professional Home Care facilities and services in this country. These facilities flourish because they are always in demand. Everyone grows older, and with age can come illness, disability and loss of independence in some cases. Most people will need some degree of professional home care and/or assistance at some point in their future.
Quality professional home care is difficult to find, regardless of the abundance of these facilities and professionals offering these services. Caring for elderly, disabled and ailing individuals is not always an easy job for several reasons. Due to their life circumstances, at times these individuals are not always pleasant to be around, and may seem unappreciative towards their care givers too. Though not intentional, these patients are dealing with some extremely challenging life circumstances and are entitled to a mood swings now and again. It takes a very patient, kind and caring individual to provide good quality professional home care and treat each patient with kindness, dignity and respect, even when they are in their less than tolerable moods.
There are many professional home care facilities and professionals that do not provide quality care and treat patients harshly and even abusively. There have been many report s of both mental and physical abuse of these individuals in residential or in home health care situations. Of course at the orientation, these so called professionals are charming and assuring that they will provide excellent care and friendly services to the patients there. However, once they get the patient to sign on and they are not in the presence of the families, their behavior towards the residents/patients is less than satisfactory and sometimes even criminal. This is another reason why quality professional home care is difficult to find and why making the decision to have a stranger care for your loved one is not an easy decision. In some cases the family members can rely on the patient to report how they are being treated by the care givers.
However, in many cases the patient is unable to express what is going on and thus the behavior continues. It is very sad to think of a family member being mistreated and not being able to express it to his family, yet this goes on all the time with health care professionals. That is why it is essential to take time in making the decision as to who you entrust the care of your loved ones with. Do the research, get feedback from other patients and families, ask questions and visit often before making your final decision. After all, this is your family you are talking about here. You do not want to take the care of your loved ones lightly, especially at this tender age when they cannot fend for or stand up for themselves against these so called professional care givers.
While it may be inevitable that we will at some point place a loved one in the protection of professional home care workers, doesn't mean we should haphazardly choose anyone with a license or degree to work in the health care industry. It is essential to do the foot work and collect as much information as possible about the professionals and/or facility you choose before entrusting your loved one to a stranger. Word of mouth can be invaluable in this situation. A recommendation from a friend or family member takes the mystery out of the equation. Having someone you trust recommend quality professional home care, should help to put your mind at ease about whether or not you are making the best decision for your loved one.

Points to Remember While Choosing a Home Health Care Agency
When one feels the need to keep an ailing loved one at home rather than a healthcare facility one has to make two primary choices. Whether an individual health care taker should be hired or should one contact an agency which offers healthcare services at home. In the light of current events pertaining to crime and misuse, hiring an agency is less risky than hiring an individual, unless the individual is well acquainted to you.
Sources to find the right agency
There is no dearth of information pertaining to home health care agencies. One can refer to search engines on the internet or look up phone directories or contact information providers or get references from the family doctor. But the best way to choose the right agency is to ask people who have utilized home health care agencies as they have first-hand experience. Moreover, if they are recommended they are probably more reliable and good. In the event of not knowing anyone who has availed of home health care services it is best to interview caregivers from a few agencies and shortlist the best.
Services Required
Another important point to keep in mind while choosing an home healthcare agency is to know its range of services and the qualification and expertise of personnel who are executing the services that one requires. In case of specialized health care it imperative for the service agency to first and foremost have personnel who are qualified to undertake the responsibility and secondly who are experienced in the area of that relevant ailment. A thorough screening process is required to be done, especially in the case of serious ailments and a reference from the caregiver's previous clients should be examined along with the agency's credentials.
How to choose a hassle free agency?
Besides taking into consideration word-of-mouth reputation and the services required, one should also consult the insurance company that is going to cover the expenses of the treatment and care. It is more convenient and advisable to contract with an agency which is listed with your insurance company, provided the agency in question offers you what you are looking for. This avoids cumbersome paperwork and complications.
Other Considerations
Important points to select a home healthcare agency are also to check if the agency has necessary approvals such as Medicare Certification, availability of the right staff for your requirement and details and background checks of staff to be deployed.

Proper Lice Treatment - How to Get Rid of Head Lice the First Time
Dealing with head lice is not something any of us look forward too. They spread easily and can be hard to treat. Many people think you get head lice by being dirty but it's not necessarily true. Actually anyone can get lice and when they do it you need to kill lice to get them to disappear. Usually it is kids, or people who work them, or the ones who get lice. Often times, it is spread at school or other places where there are a lot of kids. Just remember, if your child does bring lice home it is treatable.
Clean Up the House and Kill the Lice
The first thing you can do is to make sure you do your best to get them out of the house. Vacuuming is the best way to get rid lice in furniture and out of carpets. This gets up any hair and lice that have gotten on them by simply falling off of their head. You might want to vacuum and car seats in the car. Remove blankets, bedding and stuffed animals that are slept with and pillows and wash them in hot water. Putting them in a hot dryer helps too. Do not use pesticides to disinfect the bedding or furniture, it's not safe.

Which means they're great for most anyone, but especially kids who don't like to sit still. To complete this How-To you will need: An ear thermometer A clean cloth or paper towel Disposable probe covers Step 1: Read thermometer's instructions Read the thermometer's instructions and note any special characteristics. Step 2: Check ear for wax Look in the ear that you're planning to check—if there is too much wax in it, it won't be able to get a good reading, and you'll need to try the other ear or use an oral thermometer instead. Tip: If you suspect a fever is caused by an ear infection, do not attempt to use an ear thermometer. Step 3: Wipe tip of probe Wipe the tip of the probe with a clean cloth or paper towel, and slip on a disposable probe cover. Step 4: Pull ear up and back Pull the ear up and back to help position the probe. Tip: For babies under 12 months, pull the earlobe down and back to help position the probe. Step 5: Insert thermometer Insert the thermometer, gently wiggling it into the ear canal. Be careful not to force it ...

Why Do Some People Opt For Private Hospital Treatment?
The private hospital is an institution that has been around for a long time - in a sense it has been around a lot longer than any of the National Health Service hospitals, which were instituted in July of 1948. The NHS is of course the primary care provider for the majority of people in the United Kingdom, but a minority of people choose to go to a private hospital, either for their entire lives or for certain procedures. In this article we'll look at why people choose private care and what advantages it has.
The National Health Service is free at the point of delivery, and is funded through direct taxation. It is a very expensive institution, and as a demonstration of its size, it is one of the largest non military employers in the world. As the economic crisis continues to be felt, the public purse is having to consider cuts in many areas of the country's affairs - and with so much money going to the NHS, it is sure to be a big target. As the national health care provider, it has certain limitations in terms of comfort and waiting times.
This is where the private hospital arguably comes into its own, giving patients a little more comfort and dealing with health issues significantly more quickly than a national provider might. The health service can only provide beds in ward of several people, whereas a private hospital will be able to offer its patients private rooms in which they can be treated. Another issue that people often have with the NHS is that they have mixed sex wards; many people find this is inappropriate in the modern age. The private hospital of course solves this problem by providing single, private rooms.
Those who use a private hospital often fund the care by having health insurance. Patients therefore benefit, arguably, from having their treatments carried out much more quickly than they might expect in an NHS hospital. Sometimes, when people are not prepared to wait on the National Health Service for certain procedures, they may decide to pay for treatment on a one-off basis.
While only 8% of the UK population chooses to have treatment in private hospital institutions, it is nevertheless a popular method of addressing health issues. As the affects of the recession begin to be felt less, it is arguable that we will see more and more people opt for private medical care.

How to Determine the Good Health of Your Dog
Your pet dog has become part of your family, and as such you certainly want to ensure that he is always in good health. But just how do you determine the good health of your dog? This is one crucial question as you can prevent many illnesses with early detection.
Here are some practical tips in determining the health condition of your dog:
The normal temperature for dogs is within the range of 100 to 102. If his temperature falls out of this range, either lower or higher, you must consult with his veterinarian. To get the temperature of your dog, you can insert the thermometer rectally.
His pulse rate should anywhere between 70-120 beats per minute. The younger your dog, the faster his heart rate will be. However, if your dog is in tip top shape, his pulse rate should be closer to 70 than the 120 beats per minute.
These are two variables that when determined can help a lot in maintaining the good health of your dog. In order to ensure that these two variables maintain their normal average, your dog should get his recommended nutrients as well as he should exercise just as you and the other family members would.
If you want your dog to live longer, pay close attention to his nutrition and health. Showing him some tender love and care will also help a lot in maintaining his good health condition. Dogs are more like humans. What you do to ensure your good health can also be applied to how you are going to take care of your pet.

Preparing to Whelp Puppies
After you breed your female, you have 63 days from the day her eggs are fertilized until the puppies arrive. During this time it is necessary to buy or build a whelping bin for your female to deliver her litter. It needs to be large enough for her to move around comfortably. It is extremely important to have rails about 4 inches wide attached to all 4 sides of the bin. The rails need to be 4 inches off the floor of the whelping bin. This prevents the puppies from accidentally being crushed under the mother. Once the whelping bin is ready, line it with absorbent whelping pads. It is recommended to have 3 pads so they can be washed and rotated as needed. Make sure the whelping bin is in a warm, quiet place.
After the whelping bin is prepared, there are some other supplies you will need to have on hand. Keeping newborn puppies warm is of the utmost importance, therefore, you should have a ceramic heat source specifically designed for whelping bins. You will also need a digital rectal thermometer, thread and stainless scissors. It is usually necessary to tie off the part of the umbilical cord the mother has not removed. Once the cord is tied off, snip it above the tie with the stainless scissors. Keep a rubber bulb syringe for removing fluid from the puppies airway and liquid puppy formula and a bottle in case one or more puppy has difficulty nursing. You may also need to use a bottle and formula if there are more than 10 puppies since the mom can only nurse 10 pups at a time. If you choose, you can have several pairs of latex gloves available since it is a bit of a messy job.
Finally, it is a good idea to have a clock, paper and pencil on hand to record the time, sex and color of each puppy. The time sheet also serves as a way to track the amount of time between puppies. If the time becomes excessive, you will want to call and consult your veterinarian as their may be a problem.

10 Symptoms of Swine Flu & How a Thermometer is a Good Start
This summer they said that because the kids were off school, we would experience a great reduction in the number of cases of Swine Flu in the UK. However, as the kids across the country go back to school, there's a high chance that it will once again sweep across the nation.
So that you know what to look for and don't confuse Swine Flu with some other ailment, we've created a handy list of the 10 symptoms that you should look out for, if you want to greatly reduce the affect that Swine Flu has on you and your family.
These Key Symptoms:
Symptom 1: TEMPERATURE
According to the NHS, a sudden but consistently high body temperature of 38°C/100°F or higher is one of the core typical symptoms of swine flu. If you feel feverish, use a medical thermometer
to check your temperature regularly. For this reason, it's common sense to have a good thermometer in your home.
Symptom 2: SUDDEN COUGH
A bad cough that appears as if from nowhere is one of the typical symptoms of the H1N1 Swine Flu. Always try to cough into a handkerchief and dispose of it appropriately afterward.
Plus Some of These Other Symptoms:
Symptom 3: HEADACHE
The kind of headache you get when you have a bad cold or the flu. The type that makes you want to stay in bed.
Symptom 4: TIREDNESS
Being unusually tired or fatigued is also a symptom of common flu, but combined with the key symptoms, this is an indication that you may have swine flu and it's time to take your temperature.
Symptom 5: CHILLS & FEVER
Shivering one minute and roasting hot the next? That's another accompanying symptom of this type of flu and you should consider calling the doctor.
Symptom 6: LIMB AND JOINT PAINS
Just like when you have the regular flu, your arms and legs and all your joints seem to be heavy and ache when you move them. It could be swine flu, check your temperature with a medical thermometer
Symptom 7: UPSET STOMACH
A tender stomach with diarrhea is another sign that you may need to think about calling the Swine Flu Hotline.
Symptom 8: SORE THROAT/RUNNY NOSE
Whilst a runny nose can be caused by allergic rhinitis and the common cold, when it's accompanied by a painful sore throat, it's time to get the thermometer and check your temperature.
Symptom 9: SNEEZING
As we emerge from the hay fever period, this symptom will be easier to spot. However, remember sneezing is commonly caused by dust allergies and the common cold too.
Symptom 10: LOSS OF APPETITE
You should notice this one almost immediately. If you go off your food, it's very important that you keep your fluids up, especially if you're experiencing an upset stomach with watery stool.
Remember, it's easier to deal with Swine Flu when it's caught early on and one of the best ways to spot the symptoms is to look out for consistently high temperatures. Get a good working medical thermometer for your home or school before the Swine Flu bug really takes a bite out of you.

Autism and Biofeedback
Johnny, age 7, was fascinated for hours by running water, lost in his own world. Like many autistic children he ran on his toes and flapped his hands to self-stimulate in hopes of controlling all the noise in his head. Even minor frustrations turned into emotional meltdowns including seizures.
When Johnny came to his first brain biofeedback sessions he would retreat under the chairs. He did not talk or read. One year and 60 sessions later he makes friends wherever he goes and acts like the Mayor of the waiting room. All his autistic symptoms have now disappeared except that he is reading one year behind grade level. He now hugs his mommy out of his love for her.
Autism is a severe lifelong neuro-biological disorder characterized by limitations of communication and socialization. Autism has grown at an alarming rate from 5 in 10,000 births in 1970 up to 1 in 166 births in 2003. Little is known about the cause of autism and related disorders on the Autism spectrum such as Asperger's.
Autistic infants typically grow normally for 12-18 months and then begin losing social and communication skills. The ability to imitate disappears. There is usually poor expressive language skills. An autistic child's outward expression never includes the triad of facial expression, word and gesture. These children do not socialize with others on the playground. Rather than a true relationships, interactions are utilitarian. Autistic children use people as tools, for example bringing mom to the refrigerator and guiding her hand to get food.
Scientific research and clinical practice are showing brain biofeedback to be a very promising remedy for autism spectrum disorders. All biofeedback starts with monitoring an aspect of your body's functioning and consists of interacting with a display of your physiology. For example, as people are relaxing their hands grow warmer. Imagine holding a digital thermometer in your fingers and letting your hand temperature go up as you relax. Biofeedback is natural, benign and non-invasive. Adverse effects from biofeedback are rare and minor such as a brief headache.
The most exciting research for autism is with brain biofeedback, called neurofeedback. For 35 years brain wave biofeedback has used software connected to an EEG to produce significant improvement in numerous disorders including seizures, migraine, and ADHD. Long term follow ups show that results are sustained and that people can shed their medications.
Recent research is proving that neurofeedback also reduces the symptoms of autism. One recent study reported a 92% success rate with an average 42% reduction in autistic symptoms. We know that biofeedback generally enhances self-regulation. Speculation about how neurofeedback works includes fostering self-repair of communication pathways and promoting maturation of brain functions.
The newest form of neurofeedback is called hemoencephalography (blood-brain-image) or HEG. HEG is proving especially effective for autism. Infrared heat sensors on the head can detect blood flow within the brain. In HEG biofeedback sessions you train to increase either blood perfusion or oxygenation at specific sites such as the frontal cortex. Infrared photos show the effect to last for days and the total effect to be cumulative.
HEG training seems to work like exercise that irrigates underdeveloped areas of the brain. Think of adding more RAM into your computer. Greater brain metabolism becomes improved neural function which shows up as better behavior and new levels of achievement.Progress from neurofeedback tends to be across the board spanning: frustration tolerance, habits, sleep, cognitive, social, emotional, behavioral and executive mental functioning.
As technology advances specific neurofeedback strategies and combinations are still being developed. Some neurofeedback practitioners focus on correcting brain wave amplitudes and bringing them in line with norms. Some use EEG brain maps to guide their training of certain frequencies at particular parts of the scalp; others use symptoms to guide placement and frequencies. For example if there are too many fast beta waves in the occipital cortex (corresponding to a busy mind) then sensors would be placed on the back of the head and the client would play computer games that reward reduced activity at 23-38 Hz.
Other professionals train down excess variability of EEG signals across the entire spectrum of brain waves at central locations on the scalp. A few practitioners have clients perform various types of mental processing challenges while training such as reading or listening to stories.
In addition to brain wave amplitudes, inter-site coherence can be a goal of EEG biofeedback training. The idea here is that you don't want too much nor too little correspondence between activity at separate sites within the brain. Specialized brain maps indicate abnormality of co-modulation between each pair of 19 sites. This mapping guides training to normalize this aspect of the EEG. All of these methods and other approaches are integrated into the neurofeedback regimen in several ways depending on the case and the practitioner. A standard of practice has not been defined.
Using any variety of neurofeedback approaches, we see near complete success for 90% of those with migraines in 20 sessions. Garden variety ADD takes 40 sessions to clear up for 80% of clients. Autistic spectrum disorders are more severe and take a larger number of sessions to produce more modest results.
Biofeedback software is now so advanced that it is fairly easy to use. The price of equipment has come down so that it has become practical for some parents to do neurofeedback training in their home under the guidance of a professional.
No one is talking about a complete "cure" for autism. However clinical successes and experimental research are progressing just as it has for the several other disorders that neurofeedback has virtually conquered. For autism, there is promising scientific research of significant improvement and reports of seriously impaired clients like Johnny completing neurofeedback training with no more autistic symptoms whatsoever.

The Chiropractic Wellness Generation
'Wellness' is a regular term in the chiropractic lexicon. It's commonly used by today's chiropractor in naming clinics, advertising services and the theme of countless chiropractic websites, many of which are templates for chiropractors to plug-in their pedigree information.
So, what exactly is wellness?
Wikipedia defines wellness as being generally used to mean a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being, and has been used in the context of alternative medicine since Halbert L. Dunn, M.D. began using the phrase 'high level wellness' in the 1950s. The modern concept of wellness (becoming popular in the 1970s) is a view of health emphasizing the state of the entire being and its ongoing development, and the constant, conscious pursuit of living life to its fullest potential. Alternative approaches to wellness are often denoted by the use of two different phrases - health & wellness and wellness programs. Whether these techniques actually improve physical health is controversial and is an unsettled subject.
D.D. Palmer, the founder of chiropractic, believed that spinal misalignments ('vertebral subluxations') were the cause of most health problems, ailments and diseases that were corrected by adjusting misaligned spinal bones to alleviate disturbances of nerve supplies to tissues and organs to allow 'Innate Intelligence' (inborn within the body) to act by way of the nervous system to heal disease within the body. Early chiropractic included palpation, a heat-sensing device ('neurocalometer') and x-rays to help diagnose subluxations. Today, palpation and x-rays are still used. Many chiropractors, primarily in spinal screenings, also use computerized testing devices incorporating Thermography and surface EMG to generate reports that purportedly show the locations of subluxations. The allied health sciences, and many chiropractors, contend Palmer's vertebral subluxation theory is not supported by scientific and clinical evidence.
Whose wellness is it? Is it the patient's health or the chiropractor's wealth that is the goal of the treatment?
Many chiropractors turn to practice building consultants for assistance with practice development and growth. Doctors find consultants waiting in line, proclaiming to have the answers for practice success. These consultants include individuals who purport to be specialist in multi-disciplinary practices, marketing whizzes, rehab specialists, as well as those gurus promoting "wellness practices." One may simply Google the term "chiropractic wellness" to observe the pervasiveness of this phenomenon.
On 10/9/09, a Department of Justice, Northern District of Georgia, press release announced the health care fraud indictment of Chiropractors Andrew Sokol and Julie Weisberg (owner - operators of "WellnessOne" clinics in Marietta, Buckhead, Duluth, Vinings, and other Atlanta locations) for allegedly billing insurers over $11 million in fraudulent services.
Guess which wellness guru these doctors used
- Wellness Guru 1 (WG1) Reports that subluxations are not structural (spinal misalignments) but neurologically based. Coaches' chiropractors on using a subluxation based wellness practice model to arouse the innate and build high volume wellness based practices. Offers the 'Million Dollar Report-of-Findings' course, which instructs on; Scripting for shifting back pain patients to wellness patients; Getting yearly commitments for care; Motivating new patients to choose lifetime care. Declares the very best marketing tool on the planet - Community Lectures & Wellness Screenings with the Insight Subluxation Station that allegedly results in new patients making appointments to have a nervous system check for unhealthy neurological patterns.
- Midwest Clinic applying WG1 protocols claims 525-770 patient visits per week; and over 90% of new patients come for care of unhealthy neurological patterns.
- Wellness Guru 2 (WG2) Reports to have the tools to create a system of wellness from the inside out, a total revolution in mind and body wellness, combining the latest scientific technology with the most advanced measurement and motivational program ever developed. Offers a never before achieved multi-dimensional (physical, bio-chemical and psychological) assessment of the positive and negative stresses in daily life.
- Southeast & Midwest Clinics applying WG2 protocols purports to be a modern boutique offering spinal adjustments, personal wellness programs, surface EMG and thermal scans to monitor the nervous system, computer postural assessments of spinal stress, custom orthotics, and pillows. On-line certificates for $175.00 off price of a health screening (consultation, x-rays and surface EMG/thermal scan) and aqua massage, reportedly valued at $250.00.
- Wellness Guru 3 (WG3) Reports the easiest, most cost effective solution to transform a chiropractor's identity from a (back) specialist to a wellness doctor, and a practice's identity from one patients go to for relief into a wellness center they go to for life.
- Southeast Clinic applying WG3 protocols alleges better health by teaching and practicing the true principles of chiropractic wellness care; the finest quality of care through modern chiropractic equipment and technology, including bio-impedence analysis, neuro and orthopedic exam and total health scan.
- Wellness Guru 4 (WG4) Reports to have a team of 12 coaches with a mission to maximize the lives of millions of people by helping them achieve god-given potential through health centers, chiropractic coaching, wellness programs, wellness products and foundation.
- Midwest Clinics applying WG4 protocols use a whole person approach to wellness looking for underlying causes of neurological disturbances. Internet users get initial consult, exam & x-rays for $20 - standard fee is $250 to $300. Claim better exam than a traditional medical doctor through use of latest technology, best scientific research and proven methods to help restore body to a state of vitality and wellness. Remove obstacles to wellness rather than treat symptoms. Free comprehensive wellness inventory (valued at over $200) that includes a biostructural evaluation, thermography neuro assessment, cellular nutrition consult, and radiological screen.
- Wellness Guru 5 (WG5) Reports to have an all-inclusive, upscale program to provide tools, expertise and coaching for building a chain of million-dollar offices. Claims superiority over traditional medical community by offering Real Healthcare and not Sicknesscare. Provides patients points to reward them for visits to and purchases from member clinics, which can be redeemed for merchandise, services and more, even travel.
- Clinics throughout the U.S. applying WG5 protocols claim: Free Consult / Exam / X-rays and spinal & posture screenings. Treat ADHD, allergies, asthma, auto accidents, back/neck pain, bedwetting, carpal tunnel, colic, ear infections, Fibromyalgia, headaches, pinched nerve, PMS, pregnancy, sciatica, scoliosis, slipped disc, stress, whiplash, wellness. Provide DRX9000, chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage.
One might conclude, from researching chiropractic wellness offerings that some chiropractors, in their quest to build the million dollar practice, participate in the chiropractic wellness generation by following a blueprint:
1. Combine chiropractic with wellness services & products into business plan for accessing healthcare dollars from healthcare consumers;
2. Repackage chiropractor from a 'back doctor' to a 'wellness doctor';
3. Redefine subluxations from spinal misalignments to unhealthy neurological patterns to facilitate apparent care for every condition under-the-sun;
4. Use dubious marketing, spinal screenings and workshops to identify consumers with a ready payment-source (e.g., insurance or cash) for future chiropractic services;
5. Offer free exams and other free services (e.g., massage) to get consumers in clinic for patient conversion;
6. Incorporate putative diagnostic devices intended to persuade consumers to participate as by providing printouts depicting the elusive chiropractic subluxation;
7. Emphasize that "wellness" chiropractors enhance quality of life, eliminate pain, lower stress, make one feel good, make one more active, enables the brain to communicate with the body to fight sickness and disease...;
8. Attack non-participating peers and other healthcare disciplines by alleging that they don't provide real healthcare or use latest technological advances; and
9. Increase patient retention by offering incentives (e.g., redeemable rewards) for continuing care, and by having patients sign-on for year-long care plans, and commit to lifetime chiropractic care.
So, what say you?

Hearing Aids - 4 Tips On Choosing The Right One
When the symphony doesn't sound as sweet and the laughter of your grandchildren is slowly fading away, wearing a hearing aid is one of the best ways to improve your hearing ability. There are several factors to consider when buying a hearing aid, such as your budget, hearing aid style, technology, lifestyle concerns and hearing loss level.
Here are 4 tips on choosing the right hearing aid.
Hearing Aid Styles
The suitability of a hearing aid style is determined by the level of hearing loss, although most people with lifestyle and aesthetic concerns tend to select the style that they prefer.
An individual suffering from severe hearing loss will not benefit from a CIC model (Completely in the Canal), which is the smallest kind of hearing aid. This particular selection enhances the natural sound-collecting characteristics of the ear in minor hearing loss cases. CIC models are near invisible to the eye because they are placed far into the ear canal. CIC's are also custom-made and only work with users who have an ear canal large enough to handle this type of hearing aid insertion.
An ITC (In the Canal) model is slightly bigger than a CIC and is also placed far into the ear canal. With a somewhat larger battery, this style accommodates mild to moderate hearing loss. An ITE (In the Ear) option offers a wide range of uses that helps a variety of hearing loss levels. They are larger in size, but provide enhanced sound amplifiers, as well as additional features, including a telephone switch. Some patients feel that this type of hearing aid is easier to manage.
A BTE (Behind the Ear) showcases electronic features contained within a case positioned behind the ear. Tubes and other customized characteristics are utilized to drive sound to the ear canal. Usually presenting a sturdy body, this model is often selected for children with hearing problems. This type of hearing aid also provides increased amplification over smaller selections. To accommodate an array of lifestyle concerns, a BTE hearing aid may come in a variety of colors to match hair and skin tone.
Cost of Hearing Aids
Hearing aid prices depend on the style, features, accessories, warranty, telephone coils, advanced microphones, insurance coverage, and whether or not you need one or two hearing aids. Overall, a pair of hearing aids can cost between $500 and $6000.
Hearing Aid Technology
Basic analog technology provides the same amount of amplification regardless of sound changes. Most hearing aid users of the analog model complain that they often face periods of receiving too much sound or not enough. Basic analog hearing aids are the cheapest, making them a reasonable choice for someone on a budget.
Programmable analog technology offers amplification adjustments. Certain programmable analog hearing aids come with multiple settings. You can change the setting with a remote control or by pushing a button on the hearing aid according to your situation.
Over the years, the technology associated with hearing aids has come a long way. Digital technology utilizes computer chips to separate incoming sound into different bands and channels. Digital hearing aids highlight the most advanced technology that allows the most accurate prescription fittings.
Where to Buy
A patient may purchase a hearing aid directly through a hearing instrument manufacturer and hearing aid dispenser. Many companies now market their hearing devices on the Web, and often entice buyers with discounted prices. The internet also offers auction sites that provide fair hearing aid prices.
Careful comparison-shopping can help you find a hearing aid that meets your budget and hearing needs.

Thermometers are Scrumptious?

Wine Week 149: Cool wines for hot times.
It's been hot, really hot, around the south eastern part of Australia recently. Not just warm, but ear-wax meltingly hot! So we thought we'd offer up some wines that go well when the mercury is busting through the top of the thermometer. The All Saints Moscato is light on alcohol, with a light, bright fizz and a touch of sweetness and goes beautifully chilled down or even served over chipped ice. Wirra Wirra's Mrs. Wigley Grenache Rosé might be your style if you're not after a white but the day is just a bit too warm for a big red. And to round things out, a Pinot Noir is the obvious choice for a red during the hot months, and Paringa Estate's Estate Pinot Noir is one of the very, very best you can buy.

Seeing a Holistic Dentist Can Improve Your Health, Prevent Disease, and Help You Live Longer
If you want to be healthy, seeing your dentist is more important than ever. Your oral health has a direct link to your general health. Dental problems contribute to diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's, and other threatening conditions. Seeing your dentist and hygienist regularly can help you prevent and control these diseases. In this article, you will learn some of the things you can do at the dental office that will help you have a longer and healthier life.
1. Get Rid of Your Silver Fillings
Silver (amalgam) fillings are half mercury. Mercury is a toxin that has to be handled as hazardous waste. It does not make sense to put it in our mouths, especially when we have better materials available. Dentists trained in the safest way to handle mercury will use special techniques to prevent their patients from being exposed to more mercury during the removal process. These usually include using a rubber dam, special high-volume vacuum equipment, and the patient being on oxygen to prevent inhaling mercury vapor. Following these guidelines is very important for someone who has an illness related to mercury or of unknown origin. Of course, you don't have to be sick to look for a mercury safe dentist; my patients prefer these special precautions be taken preventively.
Mercury is also known to expand and contract with temperature, as it did in thermometers. When this happens in teeth, it can cause fractures and cracks. Fractured teeth usually require more extensive treatment like crowns and sometimes root canals. Changing silver fillings to newer materials may protect your teeth and save money in the long run.
2. Microscope Evaluations for Periodontal Disease
We all have bacteria bugs in our mouth. These bugs get into our blood stream when they are swallowed or absorbed. Some of them are harmless, but many of them contribute to periodontal (gum) disease or other infections. There is a direct link between gum disease in your mouth and diseases like heart disease and diabetes, so we take it seriously. In our office we do microscope slides for every patient in addition to checking their pocket depths. This allows us to evaluate the bacteria, use specific anti-microbial rinses or medications, and customize our approach for each individual patient. With this approach we are better able to control gum disease and its threat to your health.
3. ViziLite Oral Cancer Screening
Over 25% of oral cancers occur in people who don't smoke or have any lifestyle risk factors. There are about 30,000 new cases of oral cancer each year and only half of those people are still alive after 5 years. ViziLite screening is easy, painless, and 99% affective at catching oral cancer in the early stage. We know that early detection will save lives. Will yours be one of them?
4. Smiles
Research shows that smiling improves your mood, keeps you healthy, and helps you live longer. Smiles are also great gifts that allow you to brighten someone else's day. If there is anything about your teeth that prevents you from smiling, it can be changed. Dentists can change the color and shape of your teeth or how they fit together. When looking for a cosmetic dentist, be sure to ask to see pictures of smile makeovers by the dentist who will be doing your work. Being able to smile comfortably is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and those around you.
You can find more detailed information on these and other dental related issues on my website.

Clinical Thermometers and Children's Health
Every household with young children should possess a clinical thermometer. Young children, especially babies and infants, cannot properly describe their symptoms when they become ill. Many childhood diseases are associated with a raised temperature, sometimes inadequately described as a 'fever'.
The term 'fever' means different things to different people and I prefer to refer to a 'raised temperature'. Serious diseases such as encephalitis and viral and bacterial meningitis start off with fairly simple symptoms. Take measles, for examples. Measles can kill young children, and if it does not, can leave them with serious side-effects or complications such as hearing and visual defects, learning difficulties and brain damage.
The initial symptoms of measles are similar to those of a cold. A runny nose, a bit of a sniffle, a cough and eventually a sore throat. Temperature also rises to over 38 Celsius (100.4 Fahrenheit). If you think that your child has measles, or if temperatures stays at or goes over 38 Celsius, you should inform your doctor immediately.
If you do not have a clinical thermometer, you cannot determine the child's temperature! You may notice your child becoming a bit flushed, and may feel warmer than normal to the touch. However, it is far better to be able to measure this accurately. With measles, the temperature starts to drop after a day or two, then increases again as the spots appear and go as high as 40C (104F). You should definitely have contacted a doctor by then, but if you have no thermometer you may not have noticed the increase in temperature.
In many cases the temperature increase is the only indication that your child has more than just a cough and a runny nose. There are various types of thermometer available suitable for children. The old glass type with the kink is not recommended for young children. Digital thermometers are better, though disposable ones in the form of plastics strips with temperature sensitive dots are very useful. One side is self adhesive to stick to the skin under the armpit and the dots change colour at different temperatures. They can be used while the child is asleep and are disposable or re-usable for a certain period of time.
An alternative safe method to this is the ear thermometer which measures the infrared heat emission from the eardrum. An infrared probe is inserted into the ear and the temperature measured. This is safe because the probe is too short to reach the eardrum, and is larger than an infants ear canal. This is the type of system employed in hospitals, and is available for purchase either online or from good pharmacies for from around £30 ($50). Forehead thermometers are also available, and traditional glass rectal thermometers can be used with infants by trained staff.
The second part of this article will give more detail on thermometer types and how they are used, and also discuss 'normal' body temperature and its natural fluctuations.
